Veteran receiver will stay with Tigers organization after going unclaimed on waivers

DETROIT – Veteran receiver Dustin Garneau will remain with the Detroit Tigers organization.

Garneau, slated for an assignment Monday, cleared the unclaimed waivers and was handed outright to Triple-A Toledo.

Garneau, 34, has started four of the Tigers’ 21 games this year while third in the roster, providing depth behind Tucker Barnhart and Eric Haase, who also frequently plays in the outfield.

This roster setup proved an unsustainable luxury when active rosters were reduced from 28 to 26 players on Monday.

“He’s a good receiver. It wasn’t a performance issue,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said.

Hinch said the original idea behind the three-receiver plan was changed when the Tigers traded to Austin Meadows just before the start of the season. That gave the Tigers two daily corner fielders — Meadows and Grossman — and little room for Haase to serve as a squad bat.

That left Haase and Garneau vying for the rare at-bats.

Garneau has been squarely before, so he had every right to refuse his assignment to Toledo. But that would have required losing the remainder of his $1.175 million salary this year. Now he will catch the Mud Hens and be a potential option for the Tigers later this summer.
