The organization organizes the commemoration of the victims of lynching

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – An organization called “Change the mindset” recognizes the lives of lynching victims in Lafayette, La.

Ovide Belizaire and an unknown person were two of six people who were victims of racist lynchings throughout Lafayette Parish’s segregated history.

“Move the Mindset” vice-president, Ola Prejean, explained that there are many monuments commemorating all causes and people. “but there is very little acknowledgment of people who have been lynched and who have suffered racial terrorist lynching. This ceremony is part of it.

Residents from across the region joined the ceremony to acknowledge what happened in the past and to remember the lives of those killed. One of them is the chief of minority affairs in the parish of Lafayette, Carlos Harvin.

Harvin said it was great to see a diverse group. “Blacks and whites together to remember the name of the gentleman we know and also to remember the name of the man we don’t know. Harvin explained how the ceremony was to help end. “To bring justice and to help educate and guide us so that we can move forward together as one people,” Harvin said.

Those who joined the ceremony were able to listen to the stories of the recognized people and participated in the act of placing soil in the jars also representing the two recognized people.

Ola Prejean said “what we think is that the ground represents the blood that people shed”. She goes on to explain how it “represents the tears of people who have suffered the outrage of hard times and discrimination. It is a reflection of where we are. »

Prejean further explains how, although this is the last earth gathering ceremony for the six individuals, the next step is the historical marker project.

“We will erect markers to inform the community of the lynching story and to recognize these individuals. The six people whose lives were taken horribly and brutally in the 1800s,” Harvin said.

Move the mindset has made it a priority to ensure that Ovide Belizaire, the Unknown, and the rest of the six’s lives will no longer be in vain.
