DeRidder, LA (KPLC) – A Southwest Louisiana-based group is working to serve single-parent families by offering vacations at no cost.
The Great Adventure Camping Trip (GACT) provides a getaway for single-parent families.
“There are many more single parents raising children than ever before,” GACT director Bo Pride said. “A lot of them face challenges just by being a single parent, whether it’s financially, whether it’s just not having enough time with the kids or whatever. So we invite them to a camp and take all that stress away from them.
“Especially when it comes to single parents like myself, I’m a single parent so I know I have to constantly work and constantly go to work to come home and cook and clean. Like, that extra stuff kind of always gets pushed aside,” said Belinda Watkins of GACT. “They don’t have to worry about anything, they don’t have to plan anything, they don’t have to worry about paying anything. They just show up.
The all-inclusive camp takes place at the Kinsey Scout Reservation in Stonewall, Louisiana, July 15-17.
“They don’t have to bring anything, snacks, drinks, food – it’s all on us. The only thing you need to bring is your favorite sleeping bag or pillow,” Pride said. We have these rests.”
Pride said the trip will be filled with a range of fun outdoor activities offering life skills and opportunities to bond.
“You have people doing things they wouldn’t imagine doing or wouldn’t even have the opportunity to do. We do all the camping stuff and more,” Pride said.
GACT is asking families to register online for the trip no later than June 1 by logging on to website. If you don’t meet the criteria for the trip but want to get involved, the organizers are always looking for volunteers and you can even help sponsor a family’s trip.
